Needless to say, there was never any money. The scammer simply used this fake email notification to trick you into sending them the item for free.
Example 3
Another way scammers can get money off of you is by faking receipts. The scammer will claim that they accidentally sent you money and will ask you to transfer it back to them. They’ll present you with a fake receipt notification as proof.
Fake Account Security Alerts
Another convincing attempt is via fake account security alerts. With this one, you’ll receive an email notification claiming security issues with your account. To address these issues, you’ll be asked to click on a—phishing—link that’ll, in turn, take you to a fake Cash App page. This page will have you cluelessly expose your login information.
Fake Giveaways
Occasionally, Cash App will hold official sweepstakes or contests. The app posts such contests on its social media account for users to win special prizes like cash, stocks, or Bitcoin. This, of course, presents a golden opportunity for the fraudsters who are after your Cash App credentials or money.

To protect your Cash App account from scamming attempts, there are many things that you can be doing, among which are the following.
Before Sending Money
Make sure you’re only sending money to people you know or to verified Cash App accounts.
Also, before sending a payment, make sure you verify the recipient’s name, $Cashtag, phone number, and email address.

Ensure that your phone is password- or fingerprint-protected.
