What to do if there’s Unauthorized Cash App Payment On My Account?

September 18, 2022

What can you do if you notice an unauthorized Cash App payment on your account? And will you be able to get your money back?

Read on to find out!

Did you know that 93% of banking frauds happen online? Online payment services, like Cash App, made people’s lives easier. However, they aren’t immune to fraud attacks and unauthorized payments. So what should you do if you notice an unauthorized Cash App payment on your account?

First, you should cancel the payment, but this will only work if the transaction hasn’t been processed yet. If the money has already been taken from your account, you’ll have to request a refund, then file a dispute if the refund doesn’t work.

But how do unauthorized payments happen? And how can you cancel a transaction or file a dispute on Cash App? Let’s find out!

What to do if there's Unauthorized Cash App Payment On My Account?

How Do Cash App Unauthorized Payments Happen?

Unauthorized payments happen when your Cash App Card gets lost or stolen, or your account gets hacked. The former is much more common since hacking a Cash App account isn’t that easy.

Also, most users use additional security features like passcodes and Touch IDs, making it harder to get into their accounts.

Steps to Cancel an Unauthorized Cash App Payment

Before jumping right into the steps, you should know that canceling only works for pending payments.

This means that time is a crucial factor in getting your money back. So once you get a notification of the transaction, open the application on your phone and follow these steps:

  • Go to your recent activity by clicking on the clock icon on your home screen
  • Look for the payment you want to cancel and tap on it
  • Click on the three dots on the top right side of your screen
  • Click on Cancel
  • Click on OK

If you can’t find the Cancel button, then the payment has been processed. But don’t lose hope yet. There are still two actions to try, requesting a refund and disputing.

How to Request a Refund on Cash App

If you’re too late to cancel the payment, this means that the merchant has already received your money. You can request a refund from Cash App and see how it goes. Once you do so, the support team will communicate with the merchant and request a refund for your payment.

The merchant will have to reply within ten days, but they won’t be obliged to pay. If the scammer is a third party who bought a product from the merchant using your money, then the merchant might give you the money back. But if the merchant is the scammer, your chances are low. Still, there’s no harm in trying.

Here are the steps you should follow to request a refund:

  • Launch Cash App
  • Go to your recent activity
  • Look for the unauthorized payment and tap on it
  • Click on Refund
  • Click on OK

All you have to do now is wait for the ten days to pass. Then, you can issue a dispute if they pass and you don’t get your money back.

Disputing an Unauthorized Payment on Cash App

If you dispute a payment, Cash App will be obliged to contact its card network, which is Visa. The Visa support team will contact the merchant and ask for proof that you received a service or a product in exchange for your money.

If the merchant can’t prove it, it’s your lucky day, and you’ll get your money back. On the other hand, if the merchant proves it one way or another, you won’t get a refund.

Here’s how to dispute an unauthorized payment on Cash App:

  • Launch Cash App
  • Go to your recent activity
  • Locate the unauthorized payment and tap on it
  • Click on the three dots on the top right corner of the screen
  • Click on Need Help & Cash App Support
  • Choose Dispute Transaction
  • Fill out the required fields and answer all questions

After you file the dispute, the support team will start working on getting your money back. You’ll get updates through your email, so turn the notifications on.

What Do You Do If Your Cash App Card Gets Stolen or Lost?

If your unauthorized payment results from a lost or stolen card, you should take action immediately to prevent other transactions. Here’s what to do in case your Cash App Card gets stolen or lost:

  • Launch Cash App
  • Click on the Cash Card tab
  • Click on the image of your Cash Card
  • Choose Problem With Card
  • Tap on Card Stolen
  • Enter your passcode or Touch ID

Note that Cash App will disable your card and send you a new one. So, if it was lost and you found it, you won’t be able to use it again. Instead, you should wait for your new one to arrive.

How to Avoid Unauthorized Payments on Cash App

First, you should set up all the security features that Cash App provides.

For instance, you should create a Touch ID or passcode and turn on email notifications and two-factor authentication. Also, you should never give out your card details or personal information.

As for the card, keep it somewhere safe and try not to lose it. Suppose you lose it, even if for a short while, you can disable it temporarily from the application.

To do so, launch the application and click on the Cash Card tab. Then, click on Lock Card.

To Wrap Up

If you notice a payment on your Cash App account that you haven’t authorized, there are a few actions you can take to try and get a refund.

First, you should cancel the payment if it’s still pending. But if it’s been processed, you’ll have to request a refund. Finally, you can dispute the transaction if the previous steps didn’t work.

That is all we have regarding any unauthorized payments on your Cash App Account.
