Understanding Your Cash App 1099-K Form| UPDATED $600 Tax Law

In an effort to have more control, the IRS is now monitoring everyone who uses apps like Cash App and the transactions they make through them.

So naturally, online businesses operating on such apps are of special interest. 

So do you qualify for Form 1099 if you operate a business account on Cash App?

Cash App 1099-K Form

Should i File Cash App 1099-K?

Yes, you should file Form 1099-K if you make a total of $20,000 or more and complete 200 transactions on Cash App in a year. However, these qualifying requirements will change starting 2022, so read on for the full details.

Cash App 1099 Trigger Amount

The Cash App trigger amount for 1099-K is $20000 for now but it will be changed to $600 a year in transactions beginning from Jan. 1, 2022. Cash App will be required to send users Form 1099-K for transactions made by mail or electronically if they exceed the Cash App Trigger amount of $600 for the 1099-K form.

However, The new tax $600 reporting requirement will impact your 2022 tax return filed in 2023.

Does Cash App Send 1099-K Form?

Yes, Cash app will send you a 1099-K form from the app If you receive more than $600 and will notify the IRS for business transactions and generate a 1099K form.

However, that doesn’t mean you owe any additional taxes. This only applies for income that would normally be reported to the IRS anyway. Basically, the Current tax law requires anyone to pay taxes on income over $600, regardless of where it comes from.

A 1099-K form is a tax form sent to users that may include both taxable and nontaxable income sources.

What Is Form 1099-K?

Form 1099-K is a US tax form for Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions. The form is intended to be filed with an individual tax return and covers payments received via a third-party network or credit/debit card transaction.

In other words, Form 1099-K is used to report financial transactions made through payment settlement entities. A payment settlement entity is a third-party body that is used to process debit and credit card transactions. The amount of payment settlement entity transactions for a given year should be reported, and you do that using Form 1099-K.

Who Sends Form 1099-K?

Cash App, and other third-party payment applications, are required by law to report business accounts that qualify for Form 1099-K. In such cases, Cash App will create two copies of the form; the app will send one copy to the business owner and report the second copy to the IRS.

Which Cash App for Business Accounts Qualify for Form 1099-K?

As part of the Biden American Rescue Plan, the IRS will be tightening its grip on businesses even more. An updated law concerning Cash App businesses has been passed this March and should be effective starting 2022 onwards. 

Please note that the Form 1099-K qualification requirements depend on the state where your taxpayer information is associated. However, the conditions discussed below apply to most states.

The Present

Currently, business accounts on Cash App are required to report their income to the IRS if they check both the following conditions:

  • The business receives a total of $20,000 or more through the app within a calendar year.
  • The business completes 200 or more separate transactions through the app within said calendar year. 

The Future 

On December 31, 2021, the IRS will decrease the above thresholds. The change won’t affect the taxable and deductible classification of payments but rather how these transactions are reported. Starting 2022, the new conditions for reporting and sending tax forms will be the following:

The business receives a total of $600 or more through the app within a calendar year with no minimum threshold placed on the number of transactions through the app within the said year. 

This American Rescue Plan effort was signed into law in March 2021. The law will be effective starting January 1, 2022, and should affect your 2022 tax return filed in 2023.

A proposal 

The Biden administration has since made a tax revision proposal to change the reporting threshold from $600 to $1,000. However, the revision remains a proposal at this point and hasn’t yet been passed as a law.

What Should Cash App for Business Users Do?

Businesses need to keep good records of taxable and non-taxable transactions. While Cash App will report your income to the IRS, it won’t keep receipts. Therefore, it’s your responsibility to keep your own detailed receipts in check as a business owner. You’ll need these when it’s taxes time. 

Additionally, business owners need to separate their accounts. These rules only apply for business accounts, so if you use the app for both personal and business purposes, make sure you keep payments separate between both accounts.

Which States Have Certain Form 1099-K Requirements?

These are Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri.

In the first five states, Cash App is required to issue Form 1099-K if you make $600 or more in a year with no minimum on the number of transactions through the app.

In Illinois, the app will issue the form when you receive more than $1,000 through the app with over three transactions in a year.

As for Missouri, Cash App will be required to issue the form when you receive $1,200 or more in a year using the app, also with no minimum on the number of transactions.

Where Can I Find My Form 1099-K on Cash App?

If your Cash App business qualifies for Form 1099-K, you should be able to easily locate it on your Square Dashboard. Simply select the “Tax Forms” tab on your dashboard and download your business’s Form(s) 1099-K. 

I Sell Bitcoin on Cash App. Will I Need Form 1099-K?

No. Instead, Cash App will issue you Form 1099-B based on the information you provide on the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification (Form W-9) on the app.

Are There Other 1099 Forms?

Yes. Form 1099 has many variants that are all used to report types of income other than wages, salaries, and tips, for which Form W-2 is used instead. You can go through the different variants here.

To reiterate, Cash App businesses will receive a tax Form 1099-K if they pass certain income thresholds.

Cash App will report the income of such businesses to the IRS, sending one copy of the form to the business owner and the other to the government. As of January 2022, the Form 1099-K requirements will be updated.
